I have started reading Chocolate Wars, the history of the Cadbury dynasty, and already I am struck by how the Quakerism that was the Cadburys religion(not to mention the religion of the Rowntree and Fry chocolate families) dictated how much of how a business was run.
Business was seen as a means to make the whole community wealthier, an opportunity to care for and raise others up. Getting into debt was a no-no as it was seen as stealing and business men could be punished for any transgressions of the Quaker code of conduct. Now I’m not a fan of religion, very far from it, but you know, that sounds better than what we have now. Imagine if Tesco really did squeeze their small farmers….?
