GOODS FOR NOTHING ARTISTS

Some of the things I have had to learn to do as an artist:paint, make paint, make stretchers, stretch and prime canvas, cut and prime boards, make frames, pack and transport paintings, hang exhibitions, construct installations, make maquettes, compile quotes, work to a budget, build theatre sets, hell, build nearly anything, weld, design and make the artwork for invitations, posters, catalogues and postcards, publicize, build and maintain a website, learn how to use social media, how to serve jelly babies, photography, photo, picture editing, video editing and office programs, how to fill out forms, how to repair everything from PCs (software and hardware), cameras, artwork, ripped stockings and power tools,Β how to beg, how to barter, borrow and steal (no, not really…more like long term borrowing), how to hire jugglers, lick huge amounts of envelopes, lick arses (not very well it has to be said), be nice to people (that probably didn’t work so well either), speak in public, write coherently…and we won’t mention all the equipment I have invested in over three decades. And in the end you are asked give it away for free…remember if the money doesn’t go to the artist you aren’t supporting the arts.
